Directorate for Dairy Development had no separate Directorate untill February 1982. Their activities were carried out by the Directorate of Animal Husbandary & Veterinary Department, Assam. However, considering the importance of all the developmental activities of Dairy in the state, the Government decided to create a new, separate Directorate. In January 1982, Directorate of Dairy Development came under the administrative control of Animal Husbandary & Veterinary Department, Assam. And in 1990, a separate Directorate of Dairy Development had been created. Subsequently, the Government notified it as a permanent department in 2004.
